Liquorice root or Liquorice root candy as it is more popularly addressed, is the dried part of the liquorice plant root. Scientifically, it is referred to as Glycyrrhiza glabra. It finds its most varied use as a traditional medicine employed in eastern countries such as China , Japan , Vietnam , Korea and other Asian nations. Liquorice root sticks are two to ten millimetres in diameter and look like plain wooden sticks. They are usually chewed by people in the nations they are grown in, for they are soft and have a sweet to salty taste.
The sticks that are thinner are usually salty and taste like salmiak and the thicker ones are sweet, with a salty undertone.
